T8 T12 Bulbs Interchangeable

Due to the us putting a ban on standard 40 watt t12 lamps high efficiency ones are hard to come by but still exist some ballasts were made t8 t12 compliant.

I ve heard different contradicting things about whether t8 and t12 are truly interchangeable. The smaller t5 and t8 tubes use less energy and have less mercury in them than t12 bulbs. T8 tubes are simply 1 inch in diameter versus the 1 5 inch diameter of t12 tubes. The different sizes are not directly interchangeable so if you want to use another size then you will have to do a bit of handiwork.

The other common lamps are the larger t8 eight eighths inch 1 and t12 twelve eights inch 1 tubes. I thought t12 was outdated so i am totally confused. On the most basic level the t12 and the t8 bulbs have a different diameter tube thickness. The light fixture was installed in 1987.

Many years ago the research found out that if they could make the light tube thinner then there would also be greater energy efficiency associated with it. All these bulbs can be used vice versa so long as they share the same bi pin connections on the base the 2 pins at the end of the tube and have the right milliamp power supply requirements. The t12 is an older generation fluorescent bulb that generates light through electromagnetic induction which is considered less efficient method of creating light compared to that of newer electronic based circuits. The t12 is 1 5 inches in diameter and the t8 is 1 inch in diameter. The previous bulb was 20 watt and i think it was 2 ft.
